Data Management and Visualisation in R: Short course at SACEMA, 23-27 June 2014
This intensive five-day course will take place at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study, taught by SACEMA staff. Targeted at postgraduate students and researchers, and open to anybody involved in data analysis, the course aims to develop competence and confidence in the management, exploration and visualisation of data, using the versatile, open-source statistical software package R. Little prior experience of R will be assumed.
Contemporary interdisciplinary research presents enormous challenges in dealing with large and complex real-world data structures. Competence in an appropriate statistical package, as well as efficient data exploration, are essential starting points for building statistical models. Learning to efficiently manage, explore and visualise data not only boosts productivity, but is critical for data quality assurance purposes.
An innovative feature of the course is that we invite all participants to bring their own data to the course. Thus, each course day will have three components: lecture-presentations, practicals using a classroom demonstration dataset, and "open" practicals for participants to work on their own datasets (with support available from tutors).
There is limited partial sponsorship; acceptance will be on the basis of merit and the application deadline is 30 April 2014. The course fee, including refreshments, lunches and social events, is R3000 for early bird registration by 31 March 2014, and R4000 for later registration. Of this, R500 is a non-returnable registration fee. Accommodation, breakfast and dinner is not included in the course fee, but information about accommodation packages may be obtained through SACEMA.
Registration may be done here. Enquiries may be directed to the SACEMA Research Manager, Ms Lynnemore Scheepers, at email@example.com, or phone: +27(0)21 808 2589.
